General Robins news IN ANSWER to a recent question, one important change at the Abbey in 1992 saw Swindon Speedway’s regular race-day change from Saturday to Thursday.

This was done in order to allow greyhound racing to take place on the night that had been traditional for speedway ever since 1949.

At the time, this move wasn’t generally well received by supporters of the shale sport.

However, the Robins’ traditional Saturday race-night did return in 1993 and was to stay in place for five seasons.

Swindon Speedway reached the landmark of fifty successive seasons in 1998, but Saturday evening would no longer be speedway night.

This would now be reserved for greyhound racing, while the super shale sport had to move back to Thursday evenings.

This has been the case ever since and, although not initially popular, it has now become both established and accepted as the regular speedway race-day at Blunsdon.
