WITH a packed Arlington Stadium eagerly anticipating their first speedway action of the 2008 campaign, the weather was to prove the only winner as Eastbourne Eagles' opening Craven Shield fixture against the Swindon Robins was postponed just after the intended start time, due to the unceasing elements.
The Sussex circuit had been buffeted by rain in the few days leading up to the meeting, but due to the hardworking efforts of the Eastbourne track staff, hopes remained high that provided no further rain fell ahead of the fixture, the match could still proceed.
Though the skies remained grey, no rain fell until, seemingly inevitably, the half hour before start time, when it proceeded to fall in earnest. Despite this, the parade went ahead as planned, but conditions worsened.
Although a fifteen minute delay was called, it was hardly needed before the decision came that no racing could take place, the restaging being swiftly arranged for the Monday (17 March) evening, with a 7.30 p.m. start time.
