SGB General James Wright will be looking for an early birthday present in Thursday's British Speedway Final at Blunsdon's Abbey Stadium.

Wright, in his first full Elite League season, turns 22 on Tuesday.

Also up for grabs on Thursday is the final wildcard slot for the British Grand Prix at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff on June 28.

Wrighty, who has made a steady start to his Robins career this season, is one of the 16-strong line-up at Blunsdon.

Realistically, the title looks a straight match between Britain's GP regulars Scott Nicholls and Chris Harris. But the highest-placed rider other than Nicholls and Harris, will earn a place at Cardiff next month.

Wright has been working hard to rectify the mechanical problems which have rocked his confidence recently.

"I've struggled for the last couple of meetings and I feel I let the team down last Thursday when we were beaten by Poole," said Wright.

"I'm not riding abroad at the moment so a week is a long time to let it stew.

"I practiced on Monday at Workington, a big track and similar to Swindon, and I have chosen my best bike.

"Then I worked on it from 10am to 7am on Tuesday and I am confident I have sussed out the ignition problem - not just for Thursday but for the future as well."

Wright has more or less maintained his green sheet average since joining Swindon, starting the season on 4.73 and dropping marginally to 4.67 when the new figures kick in next week.

"I think I am a better rider than I was when winning the Premier League Riders' Championship at Swindon in February, but it is hard to prove it," said Wright.

"I am just going to go out and enjoy it on Thursday and if it happens, it happens."

Wright's manager at Swindon, Alun Rossiter, said: "Top eight is a realistic aim for James in the British Final.

"He has always done a job for us and he does have home advantage.

"Apart for the top two, it looks a very open contest.

"You would have to give David Howe a chance and Simon Stead rides Swindon really well."
